Silver Jews - Tanglewood Numbers

Album Of The Day:

Silver Jews - Tanglewood Numbers (2005)

Comments: Tanglewood Numbers is the fifth album by Silver Jews. It is also an album that was almost never made. In 2003 David Berman went through a heavy depression and bought with substance abuse which almost killed him and the album was also almost lost in an electrical fire that destroyed the studio where the album was being mastered. I am glad that in both of these cases the worst did not happen and in the end an amazing piece of art was produced that now is Tanglewood Numbers. Stephen Malkmus of Pavement, Will Oldham and Paz Lenchantin contribute to this awesome album. "Punks In The Beer Light" remains one of my favorite Silver Jews tunes of all time as well as one of the greatest contributions to Indie Rock in my opinion.

Shriekback - Manhunter

Album Of The Day:

Shriekback - Manhunter (1986)

Comments: This has quickly become one of my favorite soundtracks. It is the soundtrack for the 1986 Michael Mann film Manhunter. Shriekback is not the only artist on the soundtrack but they composed five creepy 80's songs for the movie. Other artists on the soundtrack are The Reds, Red 7, The Prime Movers, Hans Zimmer, Michel Rubini and Klaus Schulze just to name a few. This soundtrack is an amazingly overlooked 80's gem.

Favorite Tracks:
This Big Hush - Shriekback

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III

Album Of The Day:

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III (1970)

Comments: Led Zeppelin III is my favorite Led Zeppelin album. Mainly because I really enjoy hearing Jimmy Page playing acoustic and I think the compositions that they came up with here are super interesting. When I listen to Led Zeppelin III I am almost in disbelief as to how good the songs are and they could pour out of these guys. Jon Bonhams drumming blows my mind on this record as well. "Tangerine" also remains as my top Zeppelin song of all time. I would give anything to hear that live back in 1970.

Album Of The Day:

Striborg - Spiritual Catharsis (2004)

Comments: I can not get enough Striborg as of late. Amazing lo-fi black metal. This one was done on a 4-track and the lo-fi sound gives the album a certain quality that is just plain awesome. Very ambient, very black metal.

Gorgoroth - Pentagram

Album Of The Day:

Gorgoroth - Pentagram (1994)

Comments: When the bells start ringing in the song "(Under) The Pagan Megalith" I could not help but think this is the real deal and perhaps one of greatest black metal songs I have yet to hear. I have been delving deep into the musical sounds of Death Metal and Black Metal as of late. I can see why people became obsessed with these genres and it becomes all they listen to. Gorgoroth's album Pentagram is a great starting place for anyone even remotely interested in Black Metal.

Gorgoroth was founded by the only original member to remain Infernus. The name comes from the Lord Of The Rings novels. Gorgoroth is a dead plateau of evil and darkness in Mordor. When playing in Poland in 2004 an investigation by the police took place because the band had sheep's heads on stakes, 80 liters of sheep's blood and four nude models on crucifixes. The whole thing ended with a fine and charges where dropped for the most part. Gorgoroth also is against any tablature of their songs and they do not make their lyrics avalible.

Kruder & Dorfmeister - The K&D Sessions

Album Of The Day:

Kruder & Dorfmeister - The K&D Sessions (1998)

Comments: Kruder & Dorfmeister are both austrian remixers and are known for trip hop and dub. The K&D Sessions is a double album collection of all their remixes up until 1998. The biggest highlight on here was the Depeche Mode song "Useless" which I find to be the coolest versions of the song. I highly recommend the K&D Sessions to anyone who enjoys the 90's trip hop sound such as Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky.

Miles Davis - In A Silent Way

Album Of The Day:

Miles Davis - In A Silent Way (1969)

Comments: In A Silent Way is definitely Miles Davis doing great Jazz Fusion. My favorite Jazz drummer Tony Williams plays on this album and it is around the time he started Tony Williams Lifetime with John Mclaughlin. John Mclaughlin also plays guitar on this record and is amazing. Supposedly Tony Williams introduced Mclaughlin to Davis at his house. Mclaughlin played for Davis and he was so astonished by Mclaughlins guitar playing that he invited him to play on this record. This is one of my favorite Miles Davis records to listen to it is truely an unbelievable line up with Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Dave Holland and the others I have already named.

Comments: Idaho was formed in 1991 by Jeff Martin and John K. Barry. Idaho is could be categorized as slowcore or sadcore with such artists like Low and Red House Painters. Year After Year is Idaho's wonderful first full length release. I highly recommend it to anyone that likes Red House Painters, Low or American Music Club.

The Cure - 4:13 Dream

Album Of The Day:

The Cure - 4:13 Dream (2008)

Comments: I saw the Cure on this tour for 4:13 Dream in May of 2008 when they were on the tour for this album. The show was amazing. The Cure is a band that I can't help but love everything they put out. The Cure is my favorite band of all time and seems like they have been there since the beginning of my musical journey which has now spanned over a decade and a half. I find Robert Smith to be one of the most diverse artists within his own genre. The Cure have songs that have moods that rang anywhere from "Friday I'm In Love" of the album Wish which sounds like a happy poppy love song to songs like "One Hundred Years" off the Pornography album that starts with the line "It doesn't matter if we all die." "One Hundred Years" is probably one of the darkest songs I have ever heard. It is also the first Cure song I heard.
The Cure have definitely always rocked and in a way they have always done their own thing. As a live band they have gone through many changes and different line ups. Robert Smith has been the only member to stay in the band at all times since the Cure's start back in 1976. Simon Gallup who plays bass for the Cure is the second longest remaining member next to Smith. However in 1982 their were tension between Smith and Gallup which ended up turning into a fist fight over supposedly a bar tab at a night club. In 1984 however he was asked to come back and has been in the band ever since with one other short break due to being ill.

4:13 Dream some could argue that it is in some ways very similar to what the Cure have done in the past. In someways it is. Supposedly the song "Sleep When I'm Dead" was actually a song that was supposed to be on the album The Head On The Door back in 1985. With every album released there are songs that connect with me like no other band. However it's interesting with the album 4:13 Dream in particular the songs that I connect with the most are not the singles. "Underneath The Stairs" and "The Hungry Ghost" are both amazing songs and if it was up to me would have been chosen as the singles off the album. Both songs are incredibly interesting and just as good as anything Robert Smith and the Cure have ever conjured up. The song "The Only One" which was the first single off the album is not a bad song by any means. It is an incredibly happy one. I do enjoy listening to it but I've always wondered if it was about Robert Smith getting a blow job. The lyrics seems to describe this and perhaps it's unintentional but it seems like I will probably never really know. 4:13 Dream is the Cures 13th album and they continue to make amazing music and continue to be my favorite group of all time.

The Brown Bunny - John Frusciante

Album Of The Day:

John Frusciante - The Brown Bunny (2004)

Comments: This soundtrack is an interesting one because the five John Frusciante tracks that make up the second half of the album do not appear in the film. When Vincent Gallo was coming up with the idea for the movie which stars himself and Chloe Sevigny he recited the story to John Fruscainte several times. Fruscainte started to come up with music for the film which Vincent Gallo supposedly listened to on the movie set for days. On the back of the album it states that "The only CD we had with us was music John had made for the film." It has not really been explained why the Frusciante music didn't make it into the film but in the film or not the songs are unbelievable.

Felt - A Tribute To Christina Ricci

Album Of The Day:

Felt - A Tribute To Christina Ricci (2002)

Comments: Rumor has it the title comes from a wager between Slug and Murs the rappers on the album. The wager is which one can sleep with Christina Ricci first. Neither one has been successful up to this date. Slug is from Atmosphere and is one of my favorite lyricists and rappers. Murs is also great on this release. The Felt series is amazing and I am a huge fan and follower of the releases. They are up to three at this point. The Minneapolis Rhymesayers Entertainment label which was founded in 1995 is the greatest in modern hip hop. I highly recommend A Tribute To Christina Ricci to any hip hop fans.

Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire De Melody Nelson

Album Of The Day:

Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire De Melody Nelson (1971)

Comments: Histoire De Melody Nelson is a concept album in which Serge Gainsbourg collides bikes with a teenage girl named Melody Nelson and the seduction and romance that follows this incident. This album is pretty much just sexy, french and awesome. Gainsbourg created some of my favorite and what I would consider to be some of the most innovative music of the 60's and 70's. He often ventured into other genres and used amazing orchestrations. Gainsbourg is definitely one of my favorite artists.

Bang Camero - Bang Camero

Album Of The Day:

Bang Camaro - Bang Camaro (2007)

Comments: Bang Camaro was formed in Boston by guitarists Bryn Bennett and Alex Necochea. Bang Camaro is a metal band that consists of bass, two guitars, drums and a full choir anywhere from eight to twelve people. The songs are very much like 80's heavy metal anthems in the same realm as Iron Maiden and Def Leppard. In many ways I think they make this sound as good if not better.

Striborg - Embittered Darkness / Isle de Morts

Album Of The Day:

Striborg - Embittered Darkness / Isle de Morts (2006 / 1997)

Comments: Striborg which consists of one member Sin Nanna who is from Tasmania. He plays all of the instruments. Both Sin Nanna and Striborg are actually the names of a Slavonic wind god. The music falls into the black metal and dark ambient genres. There are often long atmospheric instrumentals like "Protagonist Of Misanthropic Virtues", "Race Of Apathy" and "In The Eerie Pre-Dawn Silence Of The Cold." The records are in many ways quite lo-fi which is partially what I love about this music. The lo-fi qualities give the songs an even darker and eerie vibe. Perfect music to be wandering through a forest too. The spoken word part at the end of "Digging A Ditch To Die In" is also quite appealing as well as the vocals on the song.

Guided By Voices - Half Smiles Of The Decomposed

Album Of The Day:

Guided By Voices - Half Smiles Of The Decomposed (2004)

Comments: Half Smiles Of The Decomposed is the fifteenth and final album by Guided By Voices which formed in Dayton, Ohio in 1983. To me if they had to choose an album to go out on this was a good choice. It's the perfect record to kick back to with a few beers or maybe even a six pack to. They always made great albums to drink to and it seemed like they would never stop putting out albums, EPs and singles but that day did come and it was an unfortunate one. Guided By Voices came up with some of the best lo-fi power pop songs and albums ever. Period.

Broken Social Scene Presents Brendan Canning - Something For All Of Us...

Album Of The Day:

Broken Social Scene Presents Brendan Canning - Something For All Of Us... (2008)

Comments: This is the second album in the Broken Social Scene Presents series and it went beyond my expectations. Brendan Canning is one of the founding members of the canadian group Broken Social Scene which he plays bass for. Something For All Of Us... definitely has the post rock vibe of the Broken Social Scene records. The members of Broken Social Scene no matter the project they are working on continue to release some of the most interesting and exciting rock currently being produced. Jay Reatard - Watch Me Fall

Album Of The Day:

Jay Reatard - Watch Me Fall (2009)

Comments: Jay Reatard was found dead in his home in Memphis yesterday at 3:30 A.M. He was 29 years old. Supposedly he had been complaining of flu-like symptoms. I feel he was an artist that was at his peak with his last album Watch Me Fall. Blood Visions is quite amazing as well. I will miss the Jay Reatard albums and singles. He was an extremely entertaining artist and he put out some killer records.

"I took a walk the other day and thought about how things used to be and then a cloud came into the sky it shit on me and I don't know why, ever since that day I've never been the same, tired and lonely with no one to blame and in this bedroom is where I sit cause I don't really give a shit."

Black Flag - In My Head

Album Of The Day:

Black Flag - In My Head (1985)

Comments: In My Head is the last studio album by Black Flag. The tension hit a high point around this time. Each album was very different from one another up until this point and it's rumored that Henry Rollins the vocalist confronted Greg Ginn about this. In 1986 Greg Ginn supposedly called Rollins telling him that he was quitting Black Flag. Black Flag was primarily Ginn's band and this ended the band all together. In My Head definitely seems to me to be an album that could have easily influenced the grunge movement which would come about in a few years to come. In many ways In My Head is more Metal than Punk but it is a fine line. Wonderful final album.

Chavez - Better Days Will Haunt You

Album Of The Day:

Chavez - Better Days Will Haunt You (2006)

Comments: Chavez was one of the most underrated and best bands of the 90's. Matt Sweeney sang and played guitar for them. Sweeney was previously in the band Skunk before Chavez. Chavez sound was similar to Slint and Mission Of Burma and they helped create the math rock sound. Their music is heavy on the guitars and there really has never been anything like them before or since. Chavez toured with Guided By Voices which I would have loved to have seen. Better Days Will Haunt You is a collection of everything Chavez released including both albums Gone Glimmering and Ride The Fader as well as the EP Pentagram Ring. It also collects a few other odds and ends and has a documentary about the band. Chavez is perhaps my favorite band of the 90's and one of my favorite bands of all time.

Album Of The Day:

John Patton - Along Came John (1963)

Comments: This is Big John Pattons is the first session he did as a leader for Blue Note in the 60's and he just sounds amazing on the Hammond B3. Patton is a bit blusier than Jimmy Smith which think is great. Grant Green also kills on guitar on this album. Fred Jackson and Harold Vicks are both on tenor sax and sound amazing. Ben Dixon is pretty wicked jazz drummer and this recording is no execption for him. This is a great soul jazz record which I think is often overlooked.

Comments: Though this came out around the time the album Good News For People Who Love Bad News which is not my favorite Modest Mouse album I absolutely love this live album. The version of "Broke" is unbelievable. It just kills me. I have been following Modest Mouse since The Lonesome Crowded West album which still remains my favorite and is probably one of the greatest records of all time in my opinion. Afrika Bambaataa & Family - Beware (The Funk Is Everywhere)

Album Of The Day:

Afrika Bambaataa - Beware (The Funk Is Everywhere) (1986)

Comments: Afrika Bambaataa helped to develop hip hop throughout the 80's and is regarded the father of the Electro Funk Sound. Afrika Bambaataa grew up in the Bronx and became the warlord of the street gang the Savage Seven which later became the Black Spades. He was fearless and would cross turfs to gain relationships with other gangs. The Black Spades became the largest gang in the city under his control.
Beware (The Funk Is Everywhere) is a funky, electronic venture in an 80's sort of way but is still way a head of it's time. Afrika Bambaataa hands down is just awesome in every way possible.

Album Of The Day:

The Dead Weather - Horehound (2009)

Comments: The Dead Weather is a collaboration between Alison Mosshart of The Kills, Jack White of the White Stripes and The Raconteurs, Dean Fertita of Queens Of The Stone Age and Jack Lawerance of The Raconteurs and the Greenhornes. I found this collaboration to work perfectly. I am a big fan of Mosshart's vocal's and Fertita's guitar playing. In my opinion this is the best project Jack White has been a part of and he takes the seat of the drummer on this project. The music is often dark, moody and has more in common with Queens Of The Stone Age than The White Stripes. It is everything I was hoping for and more. Album Of The Day:

Joan Of Arc - A Portable Model Of... (1997)

Comments: After Cap'n Jazz split up some of the members formed this band and the others formed The Promise Ring. The only permanent member of Joan Of Arc is singer and guitarist Tim Kinsella. Many of the tracks on Joan Of Arcs first album A Portable Model Of... is often pretty with odd sound effects and the only way to describe Tim Kinsellas vocals are interesting and often on the edge. This was an excellent album and is pretty much just beautiful. Tim Kinsellas brother Mike Kinsella (who plays under the name Owen) plays drums and guitar on many tracks on this album.

Album Of The Day:

The Jesus Lizard - Liar (1992)

Comments: I attended the Jesus Lizard show at Metro on New Years Eve and there is no where I would have rather been. There is no better way then to start the new year than with David Yow jumping into the crowd right after the clock strikes twelve screaming "I can swim" from the song "Seasick" off Goat. I will never forget that moment, best new years eve ever.
Liar is my second favorite Jesus Lizard album next to Goat. From the very first note of "Boilermaker" it is a vicious assault. That is pretty much what seeing them live is like. The Jesus Lizard gets lumped into this 90's punk genre but boy could they ever play their instruments.
